Measuring Immunity: What is Titer Testing?

3 min. readlast update: 02.15.2024

Titer testing is a medical test used to measure the amount of antibodies present in a person’s blood.

Antibodies are proteins that are produced by the body’s immune system in response to an infection or a vaccination. By measuring the amount of antibodies present in the blood, it is possible to determine whether a person has been exposed to a particular virus or bacteria and whether they have developed immunity against it.

Titer testing is often used as an alternative to vaccination in order to meet immunization requirements for your school.

A positive titer result indicates that a person has already been exposed to a virus or bacteria and has developed immunity to it, so they do not need to be vaccinated for it. However, it is important to check the immunization rules and requirements of the individual institution, as some may require additional evidence of immunity.
You can likely get a titer done to fulfill the MMR, Hep B, or Varicella requirements.

Varicella Titer:

A varicella titer, also called a varicella antibody titer test or VZV titer, is a blood test to check for your immunity to chickenpox due to previous vaccination or infection. It checks for chickenpox antibodies (concentrations of IgG antibodies) in the blood. If you are unable to find proof of immunization, but you think you have been vaccinated in the past, you may opt to take a titer test.

If your institution has a student health center, they may offer titer tests for students. It is always helpful to utilize this resource if you have it. Contact them today about getting your varicella antibody titer.

MMR Titer:

An MMR titer is a blood immunity test that checks for antibodies in your bloodstream that indicate whether or not you have immunity to the Measles, Mumps, and Rubella diseases. If you have a history of the diseases or were previously immunized with the MMR vaccination then the MMR titer will test for the antibodies in your blood to prove your immunity. If you are unable to find proof of immunization, but you think you have been vaccinated in the past, you may opt to take a titer test.

Hep B Titer:

A Hep B titer is a blood test that checks for immunity (from prior vaccination or infection) to the Hepatitis B infection. This test will state your immunity levels to Hep B infection as well as determine if you are immune or non-immune to the infection. If you are unable to find proof of immunization, but you think you have been vaccinated in the past, you may opt to take a titer test.
